House Proud Tour

So I DVR the Nate Berkus show every day while I'm work.  My favorite segment is 'House Proud' where viewers are chosen to record themselves walking around their house pointing out all of their fabulous ideas.

So, I thought I would take a shot at my own 'House Proud' tour.  I'll do my best to explain some of the ideas in the photos but if there is anything you want more info on, just let me know and I'll be happy to help :)

My Office

Art cabinet from a previous post.  The mirror I'll cover in a future post, it used to be a clock :)

This dresser was mine when I was a kid and my mom's before that.  I painted it glossy black, mosiac-ed the top in gray stone and changed the old pulls to silver knobs.  Now it holds my photo equipment in my office.

The boxes on top of the dresser are from IKEA (I don't think they sell them anymore but they used to be for desk storage and CDs).  They're all mosaic-ed with glass tile.  On the right is my start at a gallery wall-my degree from UMD in Studio Art, photos of the family, an old sign letter painted to look like metal and a collage I made from magazine photos that says, "Do What You Love What You Do."

Both of these metal tables are vintage.  The blue one in the back used to be for record storage and I scored it from GW for $8.  I love the color.  On the right is my treadmill-you can tell it gets used SO often :)  Next to it is a painting I did when I was in college.  I love the colors and the black border, I painted it 7 years ago and it fits perfectly in the space.

My desk is my old drafting table from college with my first mosaic project on top.  I mosaic-ed an IKEA table and the legs just couldn't hold the weight.  The blue glass lamp is from HomeGoods and the vases on the right side are vintage.   The beautiful polka dot screen is from a salvage yard and is super heavy.  It was a rusty mess and according to the guy who sold it to me-it was once in a Disney movie.  I sprayed it and also antiqued it to control the patina.  I love how the light comes through it during the day.  The mosaic table on the right is from a previous post and holds fabric.

Some of my shelves in my office.  I'm kind of obsessed with restyling them. The white vases are vintage milk glass, the cameras are part of my vintage camera collection.

I wanted to get nicer shelves than these old Billys but I couldn't afford the ones I liked so I decided to rework these.  I bought some paintable wallpaper from Lowes, painted them glossy black and affixed them to the back of the shelves with Gorilla duct tape.  Now I just need to do the second bookshelf :)

I covered those boxes in old atlases from my area with mod podge.  They hold some old coins.  The shadow boxes behind them are from trips I've taken.

My Bathroom / Hallway

My bathroom-done in black, white and beige (because of the tile that was there when I bought the house-floor and walls.  The mirror is from HomeGoods, the spacesaver with mirrored doors is from  The silver grate behind the faucet is another salvage yard find-it used to be a air vent cover and started out as rusty white.  On the right is my linen cabinet-from a previous post.  The wall color is Secluded Garden from Valspar.

This is on the other side of my hallway upstairs.  The chair is vintage and was painted black and the seat recovered with a blue/green botanical fabric.  The top mirror is from Target, the bottom mirror used to be a clock.

My stairway has my favorite Ansel Adams print and my favorite chandelier from Overstock.

My Closet Room

Tufted velvet ottoman from JCP, capiz chandelier from West Elm, B&W chair from Overstock.  'A' pillow I made myself with an iron-on embroidered letter.  I used the same drapes on the shoe closet as on the window for a cohesive look.

The closet system I designed myself using pieces from my local home improvement store.  I absolutely love how it turned out, everything has a place.

My Bedroom

The silver chair above is vintage and I painted the frame gray and recovered the seat in a metallic decorator fabric.  The velvet tufted chaise and tufted headboard are both from Skyline furntiure.  The pillows on the chaise are handmade in India by a seller on Etsy.  The crystal chandelier is from Overstock, the mirror from HomeGoods and the duvet cover is from West Elm.  The drapes my wonderful Mom made from lavendar colored velvet.

The dresser was left in my parents' first house by the original owners.  The veneer top was in bad shape so I tiled it with black tile and white grout.  The crystal knobs are vintage cut glass (I found these on Etsy).  The canvas above the dresser was done on (love them!) from a photo of a ceiling in Paris that I took a few years ago.  The little wrought iron vanity chair to the right was my grandmother's and I covered it in a furry white fabric, the crystal-covered pillow is from West Elm.  The mirrored nightstand is from Target.

Both bedside lamps are from HomeGoods.  The black nightstand has been mine since I was little.  My mom found it and painted it white and added a floral skirt to it.  When I was a teenager I painted it electric blue with zebra fabric on the inside (there's is a little seat that pulls out from the table).  Now, it's glossy black with a gray decorator fabric inside and brushed/antiqued pulls. The collection of Eiffel Towers came from souvenir shops in Paris.  The right photo shows the back of my walk in closet (or my Vanity room).  I have crystal hooks for my necklaces and my bracelets are on a cafe curtain rod that I screwed into the back of the door.  The rod lifts out to have access to the bracelets.

The prints above are of the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland, done by a local artist.  The lamps are from a flea market and were converted from globes to lamps by my Dad.  They started out as white and brass, they now have an antiqued silver finish with black silk shades.  I love the scale of the lamps with the demilune mirrored table below.  The shell on the table I've had for years and the color wasn't that great so I painted it black-I love it.

My Vanity Room

The table is covered in a purple velvet runner from HomeGoods.  The earrings holder spins and was found at Urban Outfitters.  The little mercury lamp is from Marshalls and the silver dishes are all vintage. The metal 'A' was another salvage find.

The vanity table is from (I have the same one in my foyer area) I added crystal knobs to make it look more custom.  The jewelry armoire is one of my favorite pieces now that I've added beautiful knobs from Anthropologie.  I love how each one is unique.

My Living Room

The large canvas was also done in college and is by far my favorite painting. My house didn't come with a fireplace so I bought this one from Lowe's to put my TV on top of it.  It has a flip down door for all of the components.

The gossip bench was an eBay find and the mosaic table was featured in a previous post.  The couch was custom ordered from Macy's and the pillows are all from HomeGoods.  The coffee table and glass-front cabinets are from  The tufted ottoman is from HomeGoods.

I took all of the B&W photos going up the stairs.  Some were printed in the darkroom when I was in college.  The dishes and candlesticks on the coffee table are all vintage finds.  The black grate in the middle that the candle is sitting on is from a salvage yard and used to be a vent cover.

The chair on the left is a vintage sewing chair (the seat opens up for storage), I found it at GW and recovered the seat and back.  The silver faceted table is from West Elm.  The table on the right is from HomeGoods, the lamp is a Target clearance find and the little letter 'a' is from an old highway sign.

My Dining Room

I painted one wall in my dining room a bright blue that really brings out the color of the velvet drapes and my blue antique depression glass collection.  The chandelier was in my grandparents' house.  I painted over the brass with some antique silver paint.  The crystals were in great shape.  The dining set is bar height and it's from JCP.  The blue glass lamp next to the bar area was an eBay find and just needed some paint and a new shade.

The blue chair above was found at a GW with an awful needlepoint seat cover.  I painted the chair the same blue paint as the wall with black accents and a fun B&W decorator fabric on the seat.  The vintage milk glass lamps were also a GW find.  My Dad rewired them for me and I updated them with black paint (they had fake wood before) and new black silk shades.  The bases actually light up as well as the top.  It's hard to tell but they have a hobnail finish to the glass.  I really love how they turned out.  In the center of the table I have part of my shell collection, I've been collecting shells wherever I go for years.

Both the armoire on the left and the china cabinet on the right were eBay finds.  I left the china cabinet in it's original finish (can you believe I didn't paint it?  Me might still happen), the mirror is a thrifted find.

The armoire was painted glossy black with new silver hardware.  The inside is painted a bright Tiffany blue.  The canvas on top is also from and is from a trip to the coast of CA.

My Kitchen

The painting of calla lilies was also done while I was in college.  Gotta love free art :)  I had a builder-grade white plastic fixture up in my kitchen that I swapped out for this glass pendant that I hung a wire basket I found at HomeGoods on.  I love the pattern is puts on the ceiling when it's on.

Well, that's it for my house proud tour.  I hope you enjoyed it.  Stay tuned for my projects from
